Cruise Vacations Tips

Cruise vacations are in a class of their own. Unlike traditional vacations, cruise vacations come with their own set of parameters. If you’re unfamiliar with these parameters or guidelines, then you might be in for a bit of a surprise when you board your first cruise vessel. So that there are fewer surprises on board, we’ve included some of the more basic questions and answers for first time cruisers.

Is every thing paid for on board?
No, you’ll need to pay for some select services. You’ll be expected to tip the crew, which amounts to about $10 per day. Alcoholic beverages are not free, nor are specialty coffees (unless you’re on board a real luxury cruise). If you want to pamper yourself with a spa, you’ll also have to pay for that service. Gambling, of course, comes out of your own pocket, as does shopping in any one of the ship’s gift shops.

Do I have to dress formal on formal dining nights?
Unless you care to eat in one of the ship’s cafés or bistros, you will have to dress up on formal night if you want to eat in the ship’s dining room. Formal dress for men includes a dinner jacket and tie (tuxedo not required) and for women, an evening dress. Not all ships have formal nights, however, especially those that have freestyle cruising. Check your ship’s brochure for details before you pack. If, by mistake, you forgot to pack formal wear, some ships even rent out tuxedos.

Can I sit anywhere I choose for dinner?
No, only if you choose to eat in one of the ship’s fast food restaurants or bistros. Otherwise, you’ll be assigned a seat the day you board the ship. That table assignment will stay the same for the entire trip. You can choose the number of stalemates you want at your table.

Can I change tables if I don’t like my table mates?
You can change tables if you don’t like your table mates. If for some reason you can’t stomach another day with the same people at your table (i.e. smokers), speak to the Maitre d’. Just keep in mind, however, that a ship is a tight space and you’ll run into your old stalemates fairly often, which might create some awkwardness.

One of the most famous cruise vacation is Caribbean cruise industry.
